20 Questions Interview With Kerli
I was so pleased to have interviewed Kerli who is a friend and inspiration to me! Find out what her favorite food and tv show is, where you can find her this summer and 5 things she can't live without + more!
"Zero Gravity" is your most recent single which is rumored to be on your upcoming second studio album! Is there a set release date yet or are you still in the writing/ recording process?
The album is done and mastered and we're talking about a fall release but we'll see. Also I never stop writing so who knows, some new material might still pop up that blows everything else away. Writing is my favorite part of the whole thing.
What is the main inspirations behind this new album's sound / mood and feel?
So many inspirations! I tried to mix in some rave vibes, ethereal elements and fantastical concepts but still make sure that the songs lyrically and melodically were able to stand on their own if you played them on an acoustic guitar. My biggest inspirations musically were Wolfgang Gartner, Robert Miles, Enya and Japanese anime characters. Now imagine them all being 16 and running away from home to go to a huge dance party with their friends. To me, dance is very spiritual so I tried to channel only love and make it sound super euphoric and uplifting. It's kinda the opposite of my last album in a way...but that's what I'm about anyway. Bubblegoth!
Are you planning on doing any touring or festivals this spring/summer? If so where can we expect to see you?
Yes! Me and my very talented friend dj Public are putting together a set and doing some dates on the identity tour in August. That's super exciting. Also I'm performing a bunch of LGBT events all around the U.S
Did you create or work on the treatment, styling or visual ideas on the "Zero Gravity" video shoot?
I did. I wrote the treatment and hand made a lot of the outfits in the video. The blue Geisha outfit for example cost me $200 dollars to make and I still have spray paint marks on my carpet cause I had no other space to make that huge dress than my apartment. Lol. I actually had someone from my team even sleep over to dip dye stuff in my bath cause we literally pulled all the visuals together in like 6 days. I can never find the pieces that I see in my head so I have to just sketch and make them. It's always a long process cause I'm ordering like pearls from china and chains from some other ebay seller and just hoping that it all actually comes together. Who's interested - I always document making of the videos and DIY stuff so they can find it on youtube.
Do you prefer to be touring and out on the road, or home recording and living the day to day life?
My favorite part of it all is writing music so that's when I really really feel amazing. Even after a late show, I often go back to my hotel room and write cause that's to me where it's at. But playing shows and meeting all my Moon Children is amazing too cause they're so inspiring.
You get to travel all the time for your job, Is there one place you haven't gone that you would love to visit?
Tokyo and Iceland. Going this year no matter what.
You have a very fun / fashionable / unique style how would you describe it, Where do you pull your inspiration from?
I call it bubblegoth although at times it's more bubble and at times it's more goth. I like putting some edgy and hard stuff together with girly stuff. I used to actually dress a lot more over the top but been feeling lately that it's getting tired so I've stripped it down more. Also it's hot in LA so I just wanna wear flip flops. lol.
Favorite designers at the moment?
Iris van Herpen, Unif, One Teaspoon, Jeremy Scott, Toxic vision. The classic ones of course never disappoint. I love McQueen and I love Chanel. Even more than the clothes, I am interested in their process, in their story. What it takes to become great... so I've watched a lot of documentaries and read a lot of stuff about them. Isn't it amazing that Chanel was the first one to dress women in pants? How huge is that? Amazing.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I can cook:) But that's just because I'm eastern European.
Five things you can't live without?
my laptop, my friends, my iphone, iced coffee and nailtique which is this nail care thing that makes them grow.
Last really good movie or TV show you loved?
Girls with Lena Dunham. I am so impressed that she wrote, directed and acted in it. I am obsessed with people that are obsessed with what they do. And the show is hilarious.
The last thing I ate was...
home made cous cous bowl with smoked salmon, avocado, cucumbers and tomatoes.
I know your very crafty as far as fashion goes like myself! is there anything new your working on at the moment?
My next project are these rhinestone embellished ballerina shoes that I'm about to make out of a pair of nude shoes I have.
Night owl or early bird?
Definitely a night owl.
Favorite restaurant ever and where?
Hermans in Stockholm. It's a little hippie vegan buffet place by the sea that feels like home. They have vegan lasagna and a bunch of other stuff that are so the best things I've ever eaten.
One beauty product you can't live without?
Nailtiques and my clinique toner.
What's your favorite band / music at the moment that you can not stop listening to?
Arty, Krewella and Basto are my latest favorite finds.
Traveling all over the world with the time zones must catch up with you and leave some serious jet lag! Best cure for it, do you try to beat it or give in!?
I try to make sure I get decent sleep cause I'm not a very fun person to be around at all if I haven't slept. Lol. Some people are so good at it...I'm not. I try to take naps so that I get at least 8 hours of sleep even if it's in 3 increments during the day.
What's something about you that might surprise your fans that they wouldn't know, or expect?
I love science.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Sushi. Hands down.
Cats or dogs? Do you have any pets?
I have a cat called Trouble who I rescued. She's the best. I've noticed I've kinda become a cat person after I got her. It's just so nice when your pet isn't all needy. I need a lot of space so dogs suffocate me.
Any last words for your Moon Children?
Love wins. :)
